Breathe the happiness of the Samba, the Bossa Nova and Carnival. It was discovered by the Portuguese in 1502 on their first expedition to Brazil. They mistook the sea for a river and, in amazement, named what they saw Rio de Janeiro. Rio because they thought they were at the mouth of one; January because the expedition started in that month.
